The Auxiliary Police Program is a volunteer partnership with the Sayreville Police Department, supporting public safety operations during emergencies, special events, and community activities. These dedicated volunteers contribute thousands of hours annually to help keep the Borough a safe place to live, work, and visit. The Sayreville Police Auxiliary is widely respected and recognized at the state level for their professionalism, training, and operational readiness.


Basic Functions

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Police and in coordination with directives from the Office of Emergency Management, Auxiliary Police Officers are utilized during emergencies, disasters, planned events, and training operations. An Auxiliary Police Officer performs general law enforcement functions, which includes street patrol, conducting preliminary police investigations, report writing, traffic control and other basic law enforcement functions.

They are utilized at special events such as parades, street fairs, and security for community events. Auxiliary Officers are required to work during maximum deployment assignments such as major disasters and major community events, and receive an additional two to four hours of training per month on various topics.

Church Detail

Providing traffic control and crossing residents who are attending church at OLV and St. Stans on Sunday mornings. All members are required to cover church on Sundays as scheduled.

Powers of Auxiliary Police

Governor's Proclamation Directive No. 28

  • During any emergency, auxiliary police of duly authorized municipal civilian defense organizations shall have the power to enforce all laws made for the conservation of the peace, and for the purpose of preserving the public peace shall have all the powers of peace officers, police officers and constables.
  • The auxiliary police may be attached to the local police force for the purpose of training. During such period of training, auxiliary police shall have all the powers of peace officers, police officers and constables except as may otherwise be prescribed by the municipality.
  • Each auxiliary police officer, before assuming the duties of his office, shall take and subscribe to the oaths required by Chapter 1 of the Title "Oaths and Affidavits" of the Revised Statutes (R.S. 41:1-1 et seq.), which oaths shall be filed with the clerk of the municipality.
  • Auxiliary police officers in good faith carrying out authorized service shall have and possess all the rights, privileges and immunities conferred upon civilian defense volunteers by the laws of this State.

Directive No. 98

During on-the-job training, auxiliary police officers shall be under the direction of the Chief of Police of their municipality. They shall be subject to the rules, regulations and disciplinary requirements of the municipal police department.
